I've known about Matt and his shreddin' for years, from watching him ride O'side park (R.I.P.) to watching him in Vult videos and seeing him in magazines... I never knew him all too well but I finally got around to meeting him recently and I figured it was about time I got an interview with him. One thing I can tell you, this man's life revolves around BMX...
Age: 24
Currently residing in: Murrieta, CA
Sponsors: Hell on Earth and AJ's Bikeshop
Years shreddin: HAHA um, 12 probably more.
So what's your story, what got you into BMX?
Jon Greer and Joe Riley rolled up to the jumps one day and that was that. Haven't stopped shred'n since.
What's your favorite terrain to shred? What kind of set ups are you into?
Tech I guess, anything that seems different and fun.
Who do you call up for a session?
Joe Riley, Tammy, Garrett Nilsson or one of the young guns around here like DGAF Dan or Little Larry, with the filming stuff I get to ride with a bunch of peeps, which is awesome!
Where can you be found shreddin' on a normal basis?
San Diego or around Temecula.
You recently became the team manager for Coalition, how did that all come about?
Mark Owen/Sidewall Distro started distributing the brand and realized that they needed someone to handle the team and advertising side of things so they offered it to me at Interbike. I can honestly say this is one of the best jobs ever.
What are your duties as the TM for Coalition?
Team, trips, videos, art, babysitting, website, everything media related and I gotta say, it's rad having control of the brands image.
Besides being a TM, what other responsibilities do you have? School? Work?
Working graveyard at TOYS-R-US and school for video and multimedia. I'm slammed for time all the time but that's the way I do.
What influences you on and off the bike and what keeps you motivated?
BMX keeps me motivated. Seeing the kids I film/shred with these days progress and having fun keeps me in that BMX lifestyle, which in turn keeps me irresponsible and immature. BOOM!
What interests do you have outside of bike riding?
Shit, ask my girl... I do nothing but work to ride and ride to work. Hahaha, seriously I'm that lame. I have interests in art and design but everything I do correlates back to BMX. I SUCK AT LIFE!!
What's up with Shutdown? Is that your company and is it still going?
HAHA, ya Shutdown is, I mean was my clothing company. I still have the screen printer and all the shit to go with it. Shutdown is pretty much just a name for the Murrieta/Temecula crew now but at one point I was pushing hard to get out some cool designs from myself and some friends. The costs and time turned out to be just a little too much for me. Hopefully I will be able to get the press up and running soon, maybe do some crazy limited shirts.
You had a section in an old video called VULT 456, what can you tell me about Aaron Nardi and filming for VULT?
Nardi is one of a kind, I was living in Grants Pass, Oregon (home of Shitty) and Aaron rolled through filming for this vid. So, I decided to tag along with Sher and Mills to see the action. Six months later GOODS had a premiere and BAM! Aaron had given me a whole section. I can't thank him enough for that and giving me a general understanding of what the filming game is all about. Nardi if you see this, THANKS!
Name 3 things in BMX you could do without:
Seriously I'm down with the trends, they bring in new kids and keep fresh ideas rolling but I could live without: Torn ACL's, plastic seats and bad attitudes.
What are your top 3 sites you check when you're on a computer?
tube8, thecomeupbmx, BNQT, Twitter - Yes I'm gay!
What do you think Ryan Mills is doing right now? What ever happened to Jake Farley?
Jake lives in Florida, I think. I talked to him at interbike for 30 seconds. Mills, well I can guess he is chill'n in Downtown with the brown but I hope his ass is in class. That was not meant to be a rap.
What do you have planned for 2010? Any New Year's resolutions you can let us know about?
Quit smoking (cigs) for the fifth time!
What's a typical day for Matt Colisch?
Check sites, edit some shit, go ride, chill with my girl Julie!
Anyone you would like to thank: My parents, Aaron Burto, Mark Owen, Julie Pinto, all my boys and Alex for hooking up this interview.
